"Our family to yours"
Ed and I truly believe family is most important, so choosing the name of our practice was not taken lightly. “If it weren’t for the support of our own families, we wouldn’t have come as far as we have,” says Kristy.
Kristy, the daughter of Joseph and Brenda Kopala, graduated from Lake Mary High School in 1994 and continued her education at Florida State University, studying biology.
Ed graduated from Jesuit High School in Tampa, Florida in 1989 and joined the US Marine Corps. “During my six-year military career I served in Desert Storm. While on a ship off the coast of Somalia, I enrolled in an on-board college class. As a challenge to myself, I took what was deemed as the most difficult course – anatomy – and I was hooked. After receiving a honorable discharge, I went to Tallahassee “FSU” to continue my education.”
“Ed and I met in an organic chemistry class at Florida State”, Kristy reflects with a twinkle in her eye. “I was his tutor, but being Ed and as serious as he is about success, it wasn’t long before he left me in the dust. We have been partners ever since. We both attended medical school at the University of Florida. After completing our first year of school we were married and had our first son Nicholas two years later. After graduating from medical school in 2002, we completed our residency at Florida Hospital, Orlando. During this time, not only did we have our second son Dylan, but Ed served as chief resident and I was named Resident of the Year.”
“The fact that we served our residencies locally gave us the opportunity to work with some of the best specialists Orlando has to offer. This also allows us to refer our patients to doctors whom we personally know,” Kristy and Ed note.
Ed and Kristy are honored to being able to give back to the Florida Hospital Family Practice Residency Program by being a part of its education curriculum. Student doctors, going through medical school, work with them in their office gathering clinical experience with patients.
Kristy and Ed value family, hard work and play. Being a part of our community is important to them, and they are active within the Seminole County Chamber of Commerce, American Medical Association, American Family Practice Medicine Association, Florida Medical Association and have privileges at Florida Hospital Orlando South & Altamonte North as well as Central Florida Regional Hospital. They strive to live a healthy lifestyle by eating right and lots of exercise. “In my free time I help coach my son’s baseball team as well as play on a team myself. We enjoy family getaways on our boat, water skiing, snow skiing and riding dirt bikes. Needless to say with two small boys Kristy stays very active and loves every moment of being their mother,” says Ed.
Lake Mary Family Physicians is truly a labor of love. The Magees believe strongly in treating patients the old-fashioned way, while still keeping up with today’s modern technology.
